Reporting to the Metallurgical and Quality Assurance Manager, The Quality Engineering Technician will apply Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspection techniques to ensure consistent quality of production by applying, developing, and enforcing good manufacturing practices. They will do this by validating NDT processes, maintain the NDT equipment and providing appropriate documentation. They will also support the QA Lab in conducting physical, chemical, and metallographic testing of Laurel Steel' s products to ensure Laurel's high standard of performance and goals are met.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Testing
- Conduct visual inspection and quality assurance tests on cold finished bar, wire, and mesh samples such as:
- Hardness testing
- Tensile testing
- Yield testing
- Reduction of area analysis
- Elongation Analysis
- Coating testing
- Fabric weld testing
- Metallurgy basics/Metallography
- Detect material defects that could cause unreliable product or process performance or product failure
- Calculate results and produce basic graphs and technical documents to report inspection results
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
- Train with experienced Quality Engineering Technician to Use non-destructive testing (NDT) and inspection techniques for the non-intrusive examination of parts, equipment or materials in a way that does not impair their usefulness such as:
- Tester calibrations
- test coil maintenance and repairs
- using troubleshooting tactics to reduce excessive noise levels and sporadic signals
- identifying mechanical flaws
- locating indications
- determining their size using both liquid penetrant and magnetic particle test methods and head plate maintenance and repairs
- Detect material defects that could cause unreliable product or process performance or product failure
- Calculate results and produce basic graphs and technical documents to report inspection results
Preventative Maintenance
- Changing filters and cleaning air conditioning units at regular intervals
- Cleaning power supply units and changing parts at regular intervals, checking for movement on NDT housings
- Checking encoders to ensure tightness and weekly blaster audits
Tagging
- Re-tagging rejected material as in-complete and sending off-line if bundle size is worth doing so
- Identifying severity of issues with quarantined material (undersize, chamfer/scratch/finish, etc.)
- Determining whether quarantined material should be re-tagged as prime based on stated issues and requirements
- Re-tagging purchased material and getting material barcodes/heats into Navision so that they can be picked, and printing tags if needed
Other Skills And Tasks
- Daily verifications of lab testers
- Calibrating spectrometer
- Diameter and length capability studies
- Performing and reporting necessary results for PPAPs
- Lock-out/ Tag-out procedures
- Instrument verification and recording via Gage
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Quality Engineering Technician Diploma, with a preferred focus on Non-Destructive Testing
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail, be a self-starter that is deadline oriented & hands-on
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Ability to work both independently and as a team player
- Strong organization skills with the ability to multitask
- Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime when required
