Darkhorse Analytics is an Alberta-based consultancy specializing in data visualization. We are information designers who turn data into insight and insight into influence.
Our clients include NGOs like Opportunity Insights, Environmental Defense Fund, Wayne State University, public organizations like Vancouver Fire and Rescue, and well-known brands like Procter & Gamble. What you'll be doing
At Darkhorse, you'll be an integral part of helping us design clear and engaging data visualizations that align with our clients' data, audience, and purpose. You will:
- Conduct data wrangling to evaluate the data's usability, profile the data, and transform it for final visualizations as needed
- Communicate the possibilities and limitations of data in relation to how it supports the client's objectives and use cases
- Brainstorm design options to present information accurately and effectively
- Produce prototypes of data visuals
- Collaborate with design team members to ensure the proposed visuals achieve the client's goals
- Participate in QA to help improve the success of the final product/solution
What we look for
We believe the right person is not defined by years of experience or education. We look for the right people at all levels of their career. Here are some of the things that will make you stand out:
- You are a wizard at working with data, and are comfortable using some combination of Excel, SQL, and R/Python. You ideally have some experience using GIS tools like QGIS to visualize data geographically.
- You genuinely enjoy problem-solving and finding patterns. The harder the challenge, the harder it is to put it down until you crack it.
- You're able to focus on the most critical parts. In a haystack of data, you are able to find the needle that can pinpoint issues or root causes. While you're detail-oriented, you can also see the big picture.
- You have an eye for how to present data visually and are learning about how to use colour/shape/interaction/ etc. to highlight the signal in the data
- You communicate well. Having the correct analytical solution is one thing, but you should also be able to develop your solution methodically and explain the whole thing to your grandmother in the end.
- You are creative in your ways of interpreting and analyzing the data. When one avenue leads to a dead-end, you can use different data sources to achieve an outcome that satisfies the business need. You're also skeptical about your findings if they don't seem correct.
